The committee for Val di Mello's defense had began the collecting of subscriptions against the project of Geogreen S.p.A., that is planning to drain ALL the torrents of the valley.
From an environmental point of view that project is crazy, its unbelievable involvements will destroy the panoramas and the touristic appeal of the valley as well. The landscape will not longer be the one that had historically been.
The project is a huge damage for the economy of the site, since one of the major economic involvements will be the ruin with no remedy of tourism, which is the main resource for the people that live in the valley.
Val di Mello is a little monumental valley well known all around the world for the extraordinary beauties of its landscape, it has been saved in the sixites from similar projects of Enel (the main Italian agency for electrical energy). The valley has survived the abuses of building trade for forty years.
There are laws of the Italian State that are protecting its beauties, in a Proclamation of 16th of November 1973, Val di Mello is described as a "site of remarkable public interest: an alpine panorama unpolluted of rare beauty, with a gorgeous vegetation of beech trees, firs and birch, plenty of waters and green meadows , which follow the feet of the mountains and that are adorned by huge stones and country houses. The striking look of the whole site, blended with the nature around, gives it an unquestionable aesthetic and traditional value".
The area became a SCI area (Site of Comunity Interest) with its inclusion in the Park of Bernina Badile Disgrazia, which is classified as a Natural Monument. This environmental fortune can not be destroyed in 2006 because of the speculative interests of a private company.
Saving Val di Mello is a matter of good sense and a duty of every citizen, a way to refuse another disaster for our region, to fix a standing limit that have not to be overstepped. We must save it to respect our own dignity and to leave to the next generations the last, beautiful garden of our Alps.
The listed citizens are asking:
To the District of Lombardia
To the Province of Sondrio
To the Town of Valmasino
- the end of releases of grants for the exploitations of waters, rivers and torrents in the Val di Mello, in particular the stopping of GeoGreen's demand for draining all the torrents of the Valley.
- the end of works in the valley.
- the future ban of all initiatives which could in any way change the laws and the acts that are defending this site.
- the support of Val di Mello's nomination for the registration in the UNESCO's WORLD HERITAGE SITES.
